The annual Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce Apple Day lakeside festival will be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, on Water Street in downtown Excelsior.

Leipold’s Gifts & Antiques owners Darel and LaVerna Leipold said that Apple Day was created to honor Excelsior’s rich history with the fruit.

In the mid-1800s, farmer Peter Gideon created a number of apple varieties that could withstand Minnesota’s climate, including the Wealthy apple in 1861. Gideon helped make commercial fruit growing possible in Minnesota.

The first Apple Day was in 1935 during the midst of the Great Depression.
