Orono resident named ‘Red Cross Hero’

On Friday, May 18, the American Red Cross Minnesota Region celebrated its 10th Annual Heroes Breakfast at the Radisson Blu Hotel. This year’s Community Hero award was given to Orono resident Scott Bissen.

Bissen was recognized as a Community Hero as a co-founder of the Pay It Forward Fund (PIFF), a nonprofit fund he started with his wife, Michelle Morey, in 2005 to help alleviate some of the financial strain that many cancer patients face while undergoing treatment. Since its founding, PIFF has paid more than $2.2 million in household bills to support nearly 2,000 local cancer patients. The nonprofit fund partners with 14 area hospitals to pay basic living expenses, a mission that grew out of personal experience.
