The smell of wet dog will be noticable in Mound’s Harbor District on Aug. 12 as Dog Days Westonka rolls in once again.
The event, sponsored by Westonka Community and Commerce, is changing it up this year with an Olympic theme for all of its events. Bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded to winners in each competition, like the high jump, limbo, a new take on musical chairs Dog Days is calling musical sits and Splash for Cash dock jumping competition. The Splash for Cash is one of Dog Day’s biggest draws. The event involves dogs lining up on a dock in the Mound Harbor District and jumping off the end of the dock to see who can jump the furthest. The grand prize winner will receive $125 and registration for the event is free.
But that’s not all. Dog Days favorites like the cutest puppy contest and costume contest will also be back, but this time around, dogs entered into the cutest puppy contest must be under six months old.
Coordinator and Veterinarian at Westonka Animal Hospital Jackie Piepkorn said the top three winners in each event will receive gold, silver or bronze medals to go along with their Olympic theme. She said she expects that this year will continue to build on the success Dog Days has had in the past.
“It’s just a lot of fun for us and for the dogs,” Piepkorn said. “It’s about having fun, but there will be lots of good educational pieces too.”
Some of those include Westonka Animal Hospital’s booth which will be doing short dental exams and information on the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department K9 program.
